The Sacred Valley of the Incas (Quechua: Willka Qhichwa), is a valley in the Andes of Peru, north of the Inca capital of Cusco. The valley was a vital area for the Inca Empire due to its fertile lands, strategic location, and abundance of natural resources. The valley stretches along the Urubamba River and encompasses several significant Inca sites, including Písac, Ollantaytambo, and Machu Picchu.
The Inca complex at Písac contains agricultural terraces, residences and fortifications. The complex is divided into several architectural sites which are separated by natural terrain but accessible by narrow paths. The original names of the sites are lost; the names that are known today were established by tradition, historians and archaeologists.
